Hotels in Meiringen Meiringen, capital of the Oberhasli district, encompasses an area of 4017 ha, of which 1000 ha are forest and 2440 ha are cultivated land, pastures and alps. The remaining area of 580 ha is non-productive land. Architecturally speaking, Meiringen is also very interesting. Most buildings in the village are not built in the typical block style of alpine houses. The reason being, that Meiringen was destroyed many times by great fires - not least due to strong warm southernly winds that blow through Oberhasli. THe were devastating fires in 1632, 1879 and, above all, on October 25th 1891. It was then decided, that new houses had to be built of stone. Only since 1926, are wooden houses allowed again in the western part of town.
